1st Galway St. Joseph's Scout Group
1st Galway St. Joseph's Scout Group

We are Galway’s oldest scout group (on the go for nearly 90 years now!) based in Galway city centre. Our den is located in the basement of Ozanam House on St. Augustine Street, just behind the Augustininan Church and a 2 minute from shop street. We have our own section of the building just for us to run our meetings and store equipment.

We run regular meetings for all the youth sections of scout here in Ireland, as well as weekend/day activities, depending on the section.

Beavers (6-8 year olds) run their meetings on Monday evenings from 7pm – 8pm.
Cubs (9-11 year olds) run their meetings on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm.
Scouts (12-15 year olds) run their meetings on Thursday evenings from 7pm – 8.45pm.
Ventures (16-18 year olds) run their meetings on Monday/Friday Evenings

All sections meet every week from September to June for Beavers and Cubs and the Scout section meetings run into July. The Venture meetings this year will not be running every week, they will instead be meeting up from time to time (at least once a month) to plan/do activities.

We are looking for volunteer leaders to work directly with our members and help plan weekly meetings and all activities. All leaders participate in these meetings as well as the activities which take place during meeting times and on some weekends.

If you have creative skills, knowledge of cooking, arts and crafts, children’s games, woodworking, this is a great opportunity to share these skills with young people. An interest in outdoor activities e.g. hiking, camping, climbing etc is also most welcomed. Even if you don’t have any outdoor skills, an enthusiasm to work with young people is all you need, as a leader you will go through various stages of training to become fully competent in your role.

Becoming a scout leader is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. You will have great fun, make friends for life and carry memories of your time with scouting forever.

If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch or else call down to one of the meetings!
