SSM in Adolescent Mental Health

SSM in Adolescent Mental Health

Discipline: Psychiatry

Title: SSM in Adolescent Mental Health

Module Directors: Dr. Fintan Byrne, Dr. Gerard Flaherty

Year: 2

This Special Study Module (SSM) will run for the second time in 2013 and focuses on the mental health challenges and issues facing the teenage population in Ireland. This module is offered to 2nd Medical students and there is a collaborative dimension to this module in that the students will spend time with Jigsaw Galway. Jigsaw Galway is part of a national network of projects supported by Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, that aims to provide tailored community-based help for young people's mental health needs. Students in groups consider mental health issues that affect this population including substance abuse and depression, to mention just two, and this service learning opportunity provides the students with an early introduction to the area of psychiatry.
