Module Title: Medical Orchestra SSM
Module Directors: Mary McPartlan, Carl Hession, Dr. Gerard Flaherty
1st and 2nd Year Medical Students who wish to musically perform within the Medical Orchestra have the opportunity to attain academic credit through the provision of public performances, and learn and reflect on the role that music plays within patient health and well being. This experience is a collaborative initiative between NUI Galway and the Music Department of a local Primary school in Galway, the Jesuits Primary School and involves the medical students attending practice within the school on the weekly basis. Professor Fidelma Dunne, Head of the School of Medicine, was instrumental in establishing the orchestra! In March 2013, the students as part of this SSM will organise a public talk entitled "The Mozart Effect: Exploring the Evidence Base for Music Therapy".
